Environmental Impact | Environmental Education | EQ4 | We offer these courses and they are linked to officially recognised credits (e.g., European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System – ECTS, in Europe) | Sustainable Development Activities at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Wasit University 1-Implementation of a Student Campaign for Flower Planting within the Framework of the Thirteenth Sustainable Development Goal (Climate Action): The Student Activities Division, in collaboration with students from the Department of Life Sciences and under the direct supervision of Pro Dr. Ali Fayadh Barghouth, the Dean’s Assistant for Administrative Affairs, conducted an extracurricular activity. This initiative involved planting various trees and flowers in the indoor and outdoor gardens of the college, aiming to perpetuate a pristine environment on campus, enhance the aesthetic appeal of the college, provide a serene escape for students, and add vibrancy to its buildings.( Picture 1) 2. **Hosting a Seminar on the Seventh Sustainable Development Goal (Clean and Affordable Energy):** The Computer Science Department organized a scientific seminar titled “The Use of Solar Energy in Sustainable Development.” The seminar aimed to educate attendees about the significance of solar energy as an alternative to conventional energy sources such as gasoline, gas, and coal, renewable and essential component of modern sustainable energy strategies. Recommendations were made to pivot towards renewable and sustainable energy sources, including solar power, to preserve the environment and ensure continuous energy supply.( Picture 2) 3. Biology Department’s Training Course on Scientific Methods for Preparing Standard Solutions and Estimating Nutrients in Plants:** Led by lec Dr. Haider Abbas Al-Amaamori, this training aimed to employ accurate scientific methods in preparing standard solutions for laboratory analyses, enhancing the precision of results. The course advised on the accurate preparation of solutions and nutrient estimation in plants to understand plant mineral requirements, boost growth and production, and underscored the importance of proper sampling techniques for plant and soil samples to ensure analytical accuracy. Further, it emphasized the need for continued collaboration between the college and state institutions to serve our beloved country.( Picture 3) 4. Contribution of a Scholarly Article on the Integration of Mineral, Organic, and Biological Fertilization by lec Dr. Haider Abbas Al- Amaamori in the Journal of the Agricultural Research Department, Ministry of Agriculture, the article elucidated the synergistic effects of mineral fertilizers, decomposed organic waste, and microorganisms in promoting plant growth, improving physiological traits, and enhancing soil properties to boost both quantity and quality of agricultural production. This integration fosters cooperation between governmental institutions, serving our esteemed nation.( Picture 4) 5.Activity Organizers: • M.S.C Noor Riyadh Riyas M.S.C Mona Mahmoud Badan M.S.C Lara Mahmoud Jabbar M.S.C Ghufran Munim Ajami M.S.C . Alaa Abdul Amir Rana Shaker Saghir Activity Goal: Focused on the first goal of sustainable development – climate action, this exhibition highlighted the importance of renewable energy as a safe, naturally abundant resource, such as solar, water, and wind energy. It aimed to educate the community, particularly students, about the essential role of renewable energy in creating a sustainable energy system capable of development and evolution without environmental risks. External Attendees (if any): More than 70 people, including professors, staff, and guests Number of Participating Students: None Number of Attending Students: College students, professors, and staff (Picture 5) 6- Activity Name: Renewable Energy: The Wealth of the Future Activity Organizers: MSC. Noor Riyadh Riyas ,MSC Mona Mahmoud Badan ,MSC Lara Mahmoud Jabbar ,MSC Ghufran Munim Ajami Activity Goal: The activity aims to achieve the first goal of sustainable development, which is climate action. Renewable energy plays a key role in global energy supply, in order to address the environmental and economic threats of climate change, which have become increasingly dangerous in recent years due to greenhouse gases. One of the most important advantages of renewable energy is that it is non-polluting to the air and atmosphere. This is because its sources are natural, unlike traditional energy sources. Renewable energy is also non-depleting and renewable, so there is no need to worry about depleting its natural sources (the atmosphere and the sun). Renewable energy provides energy to remote and open areas that cannot be reached by traditional energy. The best thing about renewable energy is that it is freely available and is not affected by political events between countries. No country can prevent the sun and wind from reaching another country, as is the case with traditional (non-renewable) energy sources, especially coal and oil. Therefore, all these advantages give renewable energy the upper hand and make it necessary to keep pace with its development, especially in industrially advanced countries that are looking for environmental safety. Target Group: Community and students External Attendees (if any): More than 50 people, including professors, staff, and guests. Number of Participating Students: None Number of Attending Students: College students, professors, and staff (Picture 6) 7. Reforestation Campaign On March 12, 2023, a tree-planting campaign was carried out at the College of Education for Pure Sciences in conjunction with the International Day of Forests. Various types of tree seedlings were planted, including acacia, jasmine, roses, and chrysanthemums. The goal of the campaign was to improve the atmosphere and increase green spaces in the college, as well as to improve the climate in the college gardens. Many students, professors, and staff members participated in the campaign. (Picture 7) 8-Scientific Course on Climate Change and Its Impact on the Environment Organizers MSC Lara Mahmoud Jabbar , MSC Maysalun Kareem Kazim MSC Noor Riyadh Riyas MSC Fuad Latif Turki The goal of the course is to raise awareness among the community about the dangers of global warming and climate change, and its impact on the environment. The course also aims to educate participants about the use of renewable energy as an alternative way to maintain a healthy and sustainable environment. *Target Group:* Community and students *External Attendees:* 70 people, including professors, staff, students, and guests *Number of Students Attending:* Students and staff members of the university (Picture 8) 9-A community scientific study was conducted by a research team at the College of Education for Pure Sciences. The study consisted of using a natural biological pesticide instead of manufactured chemical pesticides that cause pollution to the environment, soil, water and climate in general. This study is considered one of the important topics and has scientific, economic and health benefits for protecting humans from chemical substances. The study was submitted to the Directorate of Agriculture in Wasit Governorate and was discussed by a specialized scientific committee, who confirmed that it would benefit from it in the service of society and sustainable development.( Picture 9) |
